Brenda needs your
help. She is a wonderful cat, yet she goes under stress at the cattery
and refuses to eat while there. She is fine in a home.
The CARE Times staff has had a
couple different opportunities to meet Brenda and has found her to be a
wonderful cat on each visit. She is alert, gentle and responds to
touch.
As a stray found in san Juan
Capistrano, Brenda was found as a stray and taken to Orange County
Animal Shelter. CARE places a first hold on the SJC cats taken to the
shelter, so Brenda joined CARE. This cute miniature bobcat, with emerald
green eyes would have found a home months ago except for one thing. She
refuses to eat while in the cattery. This keeps her from being in the
public eye. Cats need to eat within three days, or they do not get
needed essential protein. CARE's cattery volunteers keep close eyes on
the intake and output of the cats at the cattery and were able to catch
the problem quickly. However in foster homes, Brenda does well.
CARE believes with a little close watching and patience for the first
two weeks in a new home, soft, sweet Brenda will do fine and become a
welcome loving member of a quiet home. |

Kitten
Season Lasts All Year but April and May CARE is in Kitten Over Load
- Thanks to all fosters who
helped take care of kittens during 2005. Again it was a tough year
for upper respiratory infections, and your willingness to provide
parts of your homes as isolation wards helped contain any
potential outbreaks.
- Kittens are still coming at
too fast a rate. Both CARE and Animal Control are receiving far too many unwanted moms
and kittens. Temporary Foster Homes are needed.
- Join CARE in encouraging
early spay and neuter of pets to help reduce the pet
overpopulation problems and for their pet's health.
Thanks to all
of the CARE volunteers who make this happen. Without
them we couldn't do it.

If
you have an interest in volunteering it is likely that CARE has more than
one spot for you:
The dogs and
cats need your help by extending the number of hours that they can be shown
to the public. CARE currently has a record number of dogs and cats on our
pet roster.
Plenty of Volunteer
Opportunities:
Please Volunteer to Help at the Adoption Day Events.
There are animals that still need
your help. Several

You Help CARE's dogs?
CARE's dogs
primary exposure is at Weekend Adoption Events or PR events like the CARe
SHOW 2005. However, without volunteers to help transport the dogs
and show the dogs, they end up not being shown to the public. If you are
experienced with dogs, we need your help. You can be very instrumental in
helping good dogs like Shep, Mindy, Samson and Delilah find their new home.

Featured Pet:
C.J.
Are you talking about me again?
100 Days Old.
German Shepherd mix.
C.J. is part of CARE's primary program to help the dogs in the
Orange County Shelter that originate from San Juan Capistrano. |
At
only about 100 days of age, C.J. is definitely still a puppy.
Full of curiosity and not sure about what this training stuff is
supposed to be. Like all puppies, C.J. will require time and
consistent training for potty training,
anti-chewing, crate training, anti-barking and lots of exercise. This
just comes from being a puppy. When adopting a dog, always think
through the importance of time needed to train your best friend. For
some of us, an adult dog would meet our time requirements more than
a puppy. All dogs benefit from reinforcement training time, and old
dogs definitely can learn new tricks.

Flash Gordon
Loves Smidget HISTORY: Part
of the CARE primary program where homeless and abandoned animals
from SJC are brought back from the Orange County Shelter. |
They met in their foster home. Romance hit him in a Flash.
Her gold eyes, reflected by soft gold stripes on a pastel palette of
grays drew him in like a child discovering how to remove the small layer
of black Crayon used to cover the other random colors on the
layer below. For Smidget, it was easy. After all, what girl
couldn't use a super hero for a friend.
Our
care takers soon discovered that although Flash Gordon is easy to get along
with, he gets upset and cranky when he is separated from Smidget.
This
fun loving couple are ideal for a family who would like to adopt a pair of
very uniquely different cats and not only enjoy each for themselves, but
enjoy their interactions.

Question:
Why do I hear you say "Good
Cats Wear Black"?
|
Answer:
Because it is usually true. Glad you asked.
Black cats are the
most overlooked potential friends when the public visits an animal shelter.
This is true of large black or very dark colored dogs too. Some of the
reasons are just silly, yet there are other reasons that we can help change.
Some
parts of the US have superstitions about black cats brought about by
paranoid and overly suspicious early settlers on the East Coast, For an even
longer length of time. in England they
are considered to bring good luck. Fishermen's wives keep them to help bring
their men back from sea.
Some
people get concerned about the black fur showing up on clothing, yet I
promise Erissa and my white fur shows up even more. Let your clothing
celebrate that you have an adoring cuddling friend.
Some people worry
about not seeing a black cat at night. I promise that even with three bells
on my collar, I usually cannot be seen in a bedroom at night, unless the
moon is glowing through a window, Put a metal name tag and multiple bells on
puss's collar and you will usually know where your cat is.
Casper,
what does CARE do to help black cats?
Answer:
CARE does not shy away from finding black cats homes.
This is true of adults and kittens. As a Volunteer, you can help by happily
pointing out the wonderful black cats we have available. A young man and his
wife entered the cattery to look at kittens. He asked how long they had been
in the cattery, The volunteer responded that kittens find homes quickly and
that even wonderful adults find it much harder to find homes in kitten
season. He asked which cat would have the hardest time finding a home. The
volunteer pointed out Baxter. The volunteer explained that at 12 years of
age, long hair and being a black cat, Baxter would have three strikes
against finding a home and many shelters in the US would not even provide
him the chance. The young man asked the volunteer to point out the best cat
in the cattery and the volunteer happily opened Baxter's cage and placed him
in the wife's arms. They continued to play with the kittens in the cage as
Baxter walked the floor next to them and proved indeed to be the best cat.
After thirty minutes, they were in love. As a cat, I thank this couple so
much for being so open minded and open hearted enough to open their homes to
this so deserving older black cat.
As a
volunteer during adoption days, you can help make sure that the wonderful
black cats don't visually fade into their surroundings. When speaking with
people about their cats, always be alert for owners of black cats. These
folks know the joy and wonder of these sleek, elegant, intelligent felines.
They may be looking for another to join the family or may have someone who
has left the nest that misses there obsidian friend.
Casper, I have heard that black cats tend to be healthier. What do you know?
Answer:
Studies are under way to find out why there are so
many black cats. The black cat gene is a recessive gene, so it requires a
pair of genes to turn the fur black. Researchers are actively comparing the
genomes of black cats with other cats an even see a potential for
understanding selective resistance to FIV and HIV. See this article in www.wired.com
for more information on health and black cats.
Casper, Anything else special about black cats?
Answer:
Many people feel the black cats they have owned
tend to be just a little smarter than their other cats. Then again these are
folks who have owned them. Cat's ability to solve problems, like opening
food cupboards, getting to a hidden toy, or turning the bathroom sink
into a beautiful refreshing waterfall varies by cat.
Casper, Anything else
Answer:
It seems appropriate that black cats should have a
special place in San Juan Capistrano. The members of the Fiesta Association
have shared their love of pets with Capistrano youth for many years with the
Annual Pet Parade. If we look to our friends in the Fiesta Association, with
their black hats, black boots and black vests, we quickly see that a lot of
"Good Guys Wear Black". So it follows that "Good Cats Wear Black".
Looking at CARE's
history, much of the origination of CARE comes from Dr. Cortese and Marsha
saving the Spring Street feral cats. Most of these cats were black, so let's
all celebrate by helping all of our black cats find homes.
I
would like to remind the dogs and cats reading this that many more Kennel Sponsors
are needed to move the
Adoption Center closer to being completed. Please remind your families that Kennel Sponsorship makes a nice holiday
gift for your family to recognize the pets who have been in their lives. Kennel
Sponsorship is a
wonderful gift for all of the dogs or cats that will benefit in the years to
come from the gift of Kennel Sponsorship. Click to learn
more about Kennel Sponsorship. Call
949-240-1735
to sponsor
a dog or cat kennel in your or your
pet's name at the new adoption center for a gift that gives through the
years..
Please
stop by the San Juan Capistrano Luv-A-Pet center to visit
the cats. Your visits help encourage them to come to the front of the cage,
where they need to be when that right someone comes in for a visit.
You can help by referring friends, coworkers and others to the cattery when
they are considering adding an animal to their life.
A special thanks to all who volunteered to work at a CARE adoption day, fostered a dog or
cat or helped at the cattery this quarter. Casper the Cat.

Butch
Adopted |

Through CARE, Butch has found his new home.
Abandoned at a young age at San Juan’s Mission, Butch adapted to life among a
feral cat colony, where he was exposed to Feline AIDS. Now he needs a
loving home without other cats (or dogs) where he can enjoy a safe lap, human
companionship and the regular petting he has missed out on. He
is still a little shy and wants a patient and understanding owner who will love
him for the rest of his life. $300 of any of his related veterinary
medical expenses will be paid by C.A.R.E.

Veggie
Available
|
|

Veggie, now how does a cat get a name like that. Veggie joined CARE as
part of out Second Chance cat
program with the Orange County Shelter. This very young mother arrived at CARE with 5 kittens.
The Vet helping CARE quipped five or more a day, about the kittens and
they all ended up with vegetable names. Her kittens found homes quickly, and
now it is time to find this young spayed girl a forever home. She is a
sweetheart and can be seen daily in the San Juan Capistrano Petsmart Luv-A-
Pet Adoption Center Cattery. Veggie asks that we thank these special volunteers that keep their
temporary quarters clean and healthy as they watch the public go by and decide
who to coax into the cattery next.

Vegetable Litter Adopted
|
If you are looking for a kitten, please remember that the mom of these
kittens is just a kitten herself and can seen just above the se kittens.
CARE still has many kittens that need to find homes. CARE usually has a
variety of kittens from three or more litters in the San Juan Capistrano
Petsmart in-store Adoption Center |
Granny Smith
Adopted
|

So how does an 18 month old kitten end up with the name Granny Smith?
Granny game to CARE with a litter of kittens. Like most of CARE's litters a them
was assigned to the kittens to help keep them apart in volunteer and Vet's
minds. Winesap, Gala, Gravenstein etc. So this sweet kitten ended up with Granny
Smith as the mom.

- Too Many Kittens
|
|

CARE needs your help. The Orange County Shelter hit an early period of kitten
season and asked selected rescue groups to help out. CARE has more pets to find
homes for than ever before. We need you to volunteer to help the dogs and cats
by volunteering for adoption day events. In order to adopt as many pets
as we need to in September, October, November and December, CARE will likely need to increase the number
of hours the pets are shown to the public.

Samson and Delilah
Adopted |
Samson
Delilah

SAMSON & DELILAH Mutt Mix
bonded brother & sister puppies – May be adopted individually.
SAMSON and DELILAH are spunky, energetic, &
lovable puppies. Helpless, they were found in San
Juan Capistrano suffering from a skin ailment. Their bare little bodies
were covered with scabs and small patches of fur.
Today they are healing
well and have grown back a full healthy
coat of fur. SAMSON and
DELILAH have endearing personalities, they are so full of life and
demonstrate grateful attitudes. Their enthusiastic spirits were never
diminished by their situation.
SAMSON is the smaller of the two and
proudly let’s you know he has the more dominant personality. DELILAH
is the compassionate big sister that looks over her little brother. Even
though SAMSON and DELILAH have had a rough start in life, it will be all
worth it when their healing process is met with an adoption. These two
little champs are looking forward to sharing a lifetime of love and
fulfilling companionship with their future family. Is that
family you?
Please volunteer for Saturday
Adoption Days to help them find homes.
