She
was found on the streets at about ten weeks of age and taken to the
Orange County Animal Care Center. Mindi joined CARE as part of our primary program to take care of the cats and
dogs from San Juan Capistrano.
With her foster Jack Mannix DVM
and Staff plus the Dog Wranglers she is getting adjusted to meeting
others.
Mindi has a sweet temperament,
yet will need ongoing training as she goes through her puppy stages. She
is intelligent and a little strong willed. With love and consistent
training, she should become a great friend. Mindi
is waiting to meet you
too! She's one you soon won't forget. Come
see Mindi at the Saturday adoption events at the SJC PetsMart ,

Dean Bryant, the World
Famous Auto Customizer Plans to Attend CARe
SHOW 2005
Read
Hot Rod Shows Com Article and see some of his custom cars The
CARe SHOW committee is thrilled to announce that one of the biggest names in
car customizations has asked to help the dogs and cats of San Juan Capistrano.
Dean Bryant, noted for a long career of vehicles customized for movies and a
leading trend setter in smooth custom cars will be bringing selected vehicles
from his "Elegant Customs Collection". Dean's cars are frequently
prominently featured at the Peterson Automotive Museum and major international
auto events. You have seen his cars in decades of movies, like "Hotrod
from Hell", "Gone in 60 Seconds", "Casino" and in
many major music videos. Dean
lends his cars to help fundraising events for causes he believes in like
the Special Olympics and Child Diabetes. CARE is appreciative that Dean Bryant
chose to include homeless dogs and cats in those he helps.
Internationally-recognized custom
car designer Dean Bryant creates some of the hottest custom cars in the world,
including the "Rocket Car," the back-to-back winner of the
"World's Best Custom" award, and the 1950 flame-throwing Merc
featured in films such as "Gone in 60 Seconds." Dean joins CARE in
personally inviting local and regional car-owners to take part and show their
custom cars along side some of Dean's custom classics. We definitely have a
place for you to show us your ride. Spectators
won't be disappointed. The CARe SHOW presents a broad range of works in
progress, daily drivers, week end toys, muscle cars, full out customs and
antiques.

Presidents Message:
Phillip
R. Schwartze
Plans for our
next major fundraising event continue.
The second annual CAR SHOW will be held on Saturday, February
5th at the San Juan Capistrano Community Center.
We have already received entry forms so this year’s event
will be even bigger and better than last year.
We expect almost 300 custom cars and trucks in addition to the
fantastic displays. Radio Station KLAC
will be there and super food will be served by our major sponsor Ruby’s
Restaurants.
Live entertainment will be provided by the George Fryer Combo.
Everyone should plan on attending so you can see all of the
beautiful cars and special displays.
Spectator admission will be $5 and kids under 12 are free.
We want to thank
one of our ongoing CARE Sponsors, William
Lyon Homes, for generously donating a Hydro-seeding of our Camino
Capistrano construction site. The seeding protects the recently
graded site against the elements. The plant seeding occurred just
before our first fall rainstorm and worked wonderfully.
Lyon Homes also
provided construction of a chain link fence to eliminate any illegal
dumping before we begin construction.
All of the CARE
volunteers have done fantastic jobs with all of the adoptions in the
last few months. We
would not be successful if it were not for the volunteers who work at
the Cattery at Petsmart
and the many fine people who assist in our construction fundraising
efforts.
Thank you one
and all for allowing me to be President of this great organization
and I am excited about our future.

Vets on a Mission -
- Thanks to all fosters who
helped take care of kittens during 2004. It was a tough year
for upper respiratory infections, and your willingness to provide
parts of your homes as isolation wards helped contain any
potential outbreaks.
- Kittens are coming. It seems
like we are just now adopting the last of our 2004 kitties, yet
both CARE and Animal Control will soon begin to receive unwanted moms
and kittens.
- Join CARE in encouraging
early spay and neuter of pets to help reduce the pet
overpopulation problems and for their pet's health.
- March is Pet Dental Health
month. Improvements in dog and cat dental health continue to
contribute to the extended average life spans of pets. Check with your
pet's Vet to see if it is time for
scheduled teeth cleaning. Healthy gums reduce the chances for
infections.

CARE
Passes their 500th Pet Placement
That
is an amazing milestone, considering that we do not have our facility
built yet, and depend entirely on our foster families and adoption
events at the San Juan Capistrano PETsMART Store. Our adoptable
puppy, Mindi is now looking for a forever home. During the last month, CARE has
rescued and placed 12 homeless cats and Lucy the dog. Thanks to all
of the CARE volunteers who make this happen. Without
them we couldn't do it.
Tasha's
Story
Getting Back Home - Destiny Steps In
In December CARE rescued a
Husky from the shelter. The dog Foster Committee had just
learned that one of CARE's first adopted dogs, Sasha had recently
passed away. Sasha was loved by those who visited her at adoption
events and the foster committee while in their care. In Sasha's
honor, they decided to name the Husky Tasha. After being in our
program a few weeks, Tasha's owner found CARE. While out of state,
Tasha was being taken care of by others and she ended up in
the OC Shelter. On one of her legs, Tasha had a minor health problem
that was being treated, so she was not yet ready for adoption.
During an exercise and training outing where CARE Dog Wranglers
worked with Tasha at a local park, a neighbor recognized her. Her
owner had still been looking for her. He was thankful that she was
safe with CARE and we had rescued her from the shelter to get her
ready to find a new home. He was very happy that she was able to
come back home with him.
When CARE asked what her real
name was, he replied "Tasha". Destiny stepped in to take
Tasha back home.

Can
You Help CARE's dogs?
CARE's dogs
primary exposure is at Weekend Adoption Events or PR events like the CARe
SHOW 2005. However, without volunteers to help transport the dogs
and show the dogs, they end up not being shown to the public. If you are
experienced with dogs, we need your help. You can be very instrumental in
helping good dogs like Shep, find their new home.

Winston and Peanut |
Dear CARE:
I just wanted to drop you a note
to reassure you that the two kittens you placed with us are doing
beautifully in their new home. They have adapted to each other
and truly do love one another in just a short time. It is so
cute to see them cuddle up, sound asleep, and to watch the interaction
of their play together. They have already brought a lot of joy
into our lives. We wanted cats that liked to be loved, and these
two certainly do.
While we are at work, they have
the run of the house and so far have been very good boys. At
night they go to their bedroom to sleep, as my husband is just so
allergic, it wouldn't work with them sleeping with us.
Thank you for all the time and
effort you put into this wonderful organization. The community
is blest to have people like you involved.
Sincerely, Bob
and Sammajane Way

Question:
Casper, What
changes can we expect for the web site this year?
|
Answer:
Quite a few. A team is being put together to completely redesign the website.
The web
site has been meeting a variety of goals and needs for the pets and for CARE. We
want to freshen it up with a more current look and make it easier to maintain.
The first goal is to present the dogs and cats to help them find homes.
Additional goals include communicating with CARE Members, Volunteers, Supporters
and the public at large in learning more about CARE. The web site also helps
promote fundraising efforts and houses a file cabinet that facilitates
volunteers while doing the work of CARE. More than 1,000 unique visitors visited
the CARE web site each of the last three months of 2004. In December, we set a
record of 1480 unique website visitors. For January 2005, your CARE web site is
on track for well over 2,000 visitors seeking new members of their families,
info on volunteering and on our fundraising events. This is roughly an increase
of four times the number of visitors over the last year.
Casper,
what are the first changes?
Answer:
Hopefully,
the "CARE Times" will go to a quarterly publication. Our hopes are to stagger the
dates with the "CARE Quarterly" printed Newsletter to keep you current. Should an
important change take place, we will put that on the home page (or a link to the
info) and then have a special edition of the CARE Times. Casper,
The home page changed. It is easier to read!
Answer: Yep,
the home page background is supposed to be Shep, one of our recently adopted
dog's fur. The busy background was causing a bit of difficulty reading the print.
We put solid backgrounds behind the words to make them easier to see. In general
the colors of the CARE web site are colors that are found on the cats and dogs
that we help. Casper,
The navigation on some pages is different.
Answer: Some
of you reported that the older (golden retriever colored) buttons loaded too
slowly on your computers. Netscape users in particular were having very long
load times. We have started rolling out a faster loading navigation set
(chocolate lab colors) on many of the pages. We
split the "Available Animals" page into "Adopt a Dog" and
"Adopt a Cat" pages. Since we cannot help as many dogs as we would
like until we raise more money for the Adoption Center, you may see dogs from a
featured shelter or Rescue group who has helped CARE. We
added a button to the CARE "File Cabinet" to assist those of you who
help with fostering, fundraising and adoptions. Casper,
What is on the Donate & Shopping
Answer: CARE
will be using the "Network for Good Donate Now button. This links to
their secure web site to allow online donations to CARE. You might also see this
button on some of the other pages. Memberships and Kennel Sponsorships
should still be handled via mail. The
"Donate and Shop" page also includes special offers from selected
merchants.
Check out that offer and see the Donate
& Shop page. Answer:
I would like to remind the dogs and cats reading this that many more Kennel Sponsors
are needed to move the
Adoption Center closer to being completed. Please remind your families that Kennel Sponsorship makes a nice holiday
gift for your family to recognize the pets who have been in their lives. Kennel
Sponsorship is a
wonderful gift for all of the dogs or cats that will benefit in the years to
come from the gift of Kennel Sponsorship. Click to learn
more about Kennel Sponsorship. Call
949-240-1735
to sponsor
a dog or cat kennel in your or your
pet's name at the new adoption center for a gift that gives through the
years..
Please
stop by the San Juan Capistrano Luv-A-Pet center to visit
the cats. Your visits help encourage them to come to the front of the cage,
where they need to be when that right someone comes in for a visit.
You can help by referring friends, coworkers and others to the cattery when
they are considering adding an animal to their life.
A special thanks to all who volunteered to work at a CARE adoption day, fostered a dog or
cat or helped at the cattery this quarter. Casper the Cat.

What a beautiful, friendly and well mannered cat. What happened to
this lovely cat that she was lost and found as a stray? It took us a vet
exam to discover the mystery….she had been injured. Her tail had been
caught and badly crushed. Now this wonderful cat has 1/2 of a tail and is
out of pain and loving all the attention.

Soda Adopted

|

Soda came to CARE with her young kittens.
Have
you noticed that CARE uses themes for their kitten names? Soda's kittens
included Mt. Dew, Dr. Pepper and Pepsi. Betsey Ross's kittens
were Samuel Adams, George and Martha Washington. This helps CARE keep the
litters separate until down to one kitten. By keeping the kittens
separated, we are better able to control the spread of illness in our kitten
population and help protect their young immune systems.

CARE Trivia
Questons
|
|
Where did the dog toy
KONG come from?
Answers:
Kong toys were
‘invented’ by German Shepard named Fritz who loved to chew rocks.
Fritz’s owner, Joe Markham, while taking apart his Volkswagon
transmission and suspension from under the car tossed spare parts in the
directon of the dog to keep him away occupied. Fritz became occupied with one
particular part of the car. This heavy rubber part made to look like three
donuts stacked atop of each other, gave Joe the idea for Kongs.
Kongs of different sizes have become a common member of many dogs toy chests.
