Adopted!!!

Call CARE (949) 240-1735 to arrange a visit with Sharkie.

|
Sharkie needs your
help. He is a wonderful cat, yet he needs someone to help him understand
when it is not appropriate to use his teeth. An experienced cat
owner can retrain Sharkie and find out what a uniquely wonderful character
that comes with him.

The CARE Times staff has had a
couple different opportunities to meet Sharkie and has found him to be a
wonderful cat on each visit. He is alert, talkative, strong and responds to
touch.
He is definitely a boy cat. He is
quick to greet people and observant of all that goes on around him. At
first cattery volunteers thought Sharkie plays to rough with the kittens
and still believe he does. As he spent time in the cattery, volunteers
noticed an odd twist. Sharkie is more like an enforcer. He tended to go to
the kitten that he thought was being aggressive with another cat and
"correct" them. Cattery volunteers also noticed Sharkie gets upset when he observes them needing to slightly restrain a kitten or adult to
apply medication. They figured out Sharkie is protective of other cats,
yet sometimes it causes him to over react. Sharkie is independent,
and would like his way. However, the CARE Times staff has found that by
watching his body language and being aware of his nature, we can return
him to the cage even when he would prefer not to go back. For an
experienced cat person, Sharkie is a good cat. He just needs someone
who is aware of his behavior and can help train this youngster a little
more. The reward for their investment in time, will be a very nice
catch. |

- Thanks to all fosters who
helped take care of kittens during 2005. Again it was a tough year
for upper respiratory infections, and your willingness to provide
parts of your homes as isolation wards helped contain any
potential outbreaks.
- Join CARE in encouraging
early spay and neuter of pets to help reduce the pet
overpopulation problems and for their pet's health.
Thanks to all

them we couldn't do it.

If
you have an interest in volunteering it is likely that CARE has more than
one spot for you:
The dogs and
cats need your help by extending the number of hours that they can be shown
to the public. CARE currently has a record number of dogs (9) and cats (many,
many) on our
pet roster.
Plenty of Volunteer
Opportunities:
Please Volunteer to Help at the Adoption Day Events.
There are animals that still need
your help. Several
volunteers are needed every week of the year. Which weeks can you help
at an adoption event

Can
You Help CARE's dogs?
CARE's dogs
primary exposure is at Weekend Adoption Events or PR events like the CARe
SHOW 2006. However, without volunteers to help transport the dogs
and show the dogs, they end up not being shown to the public. If you are
experienced with dogs, we need your help. You can be very instrumental in
helping good dogs like Trooper, Bosley, Duke and Nina find their new home.

Featured Pet:
Bosley
10 Year Old.
Mastiff mix.
Bosley is part of CARE's primary program to help the dogs in the
Orange County Shelter that originate from San Juan Capistrano. |
Bosley is a lover. At 107 pounds, he is no
lap dog. This big, wonderful, gentleman of a dog, enjoys his walks, yet do to
his size needs someone who is alert when walking him. Bosley
has a cute, wise face accented by black. Two white front paws accent
his golden body. This boy is a favorite of the CARE Dog
Wranglers and should not be missed by those wanting a good boy their
life. When adopting a dog, always think
through the importance of time needed to train your best friend. For
some of us, an adult dog would meet our time requirements more than
a puppy. All dogs benefit from reinforcement training time, and old
dogs definitely can learn new tricks. Come meet this good boy.

Jonathan &
Toyota HISTORY: Part
of the CARE primary program where homeless and abandoned animals
from SJC are brought back from the Orange County Shelter. These
are the last of each of their respective litters. |
Absolutely two of the best kittens of the season. These two ended up
being too close to other kittens catching the kitty flu and were pulled
from public view several times. Both of these two are very healthy,
active, loving and gentle. Although they are independent enough to be on
their own, it is very hard to find a pair who really like each
other this much as friends. But now for the best news....There is room for
you in that friendship too.
This
fun loving pair of very young feline friends are ideal for a family who would like to adopt a pair of
very uniquely different cats and not only enjoy each for themselves, but
enjoy their interactions.

Question:
What
can we do to be better prepared for a disaster, like an earthquake, flood
or fire?
|
Answer: Glad you asked.
This has been a tough
year for many inside and outside of the US. Nature blasted many parts of the
world with water, wind, waves and fury. Each of us watched, as people and
pets alike suffered during and after she calmed back down. Changes in how
pets are treated after disasters will result from the lessons learned.
In New Orleans, the
failure to adequately plan for disaster appeared at all levels. Yet it is
most obvious at the individual and local levels. Tethering the dog to the
pipes under the house in a flood plain, or shoving four cats into the
enclosed attack with two days food, is not adequate preparation.
Not all individuals
suffered from a total lack of planning. We have web friends who post
on Cat Health Bulletin Boards, whose homes ended up nearly fully under water
in New Orleans. They had evacuation plans which included their pets.
Additionally, they evacuated neighbor's pets.
Casper, what is
different about these people?
Answer:
The primary difference
is the respect they have for their pets. They see them as valuable members
of the family rather than possessions. They appreciate the small gifts of
peace, friendship, comfort, entertainment, and caring that their animals
provide to them. Neither of our two web friends are "well to do". Both lost
most of their possessions. They have begun demolition on parts of their
residences and hope to continue to rebuild.
Casper, yet it sounds like they were prepared.
Answer:
They were prepared. In advance, they had set up
alternative evacuation destinations that would allow them to bring their
pets. They had food and medications for their pets in containers that allowed them to "grab
and go".
Casper, what else helped them be prepared?
Answer:
Disasters differ, rather than speak specifically about
their experiences, I think our friends prefer that I point you to an online
resource. During major US disasters,
you have probably noticed that the CARE Technology Committee includes home
page links to the United Animal Nations web site. UAN has a network of over
2,000 trained volunteers nationwide that help in natural and man made
disasters. Members of their Emergency Animal Response Service where on the
way before the winds subsided in New Orleans and Texas.
United Animal Nation is not just about responding to disasters, This group
excels at helping local groups promote disaster preparedness for pets. They work at all
levels of government, yet know that the best preparations need to happen at
the individual and local levels. Their 2005 Disaster Preparedness Training
Seminars where sold out. 2006 class schedules should be available soon.
The following links
will provide you with checklists that will help you be prepared and think
through how you can keep your pet safer when disaster strikes. This is quite
similar to earthquake preparedness, yet for your pets. Take a look. How
many items do you have in place? How many alternate locations do you have
available today? Completing your list and thinking things through in
advance, may be the key to having your pet with you should a local disaster
occur. Planning is the key for preparedness
during a disaster. Please take action and check your supplies and plan
today. Visit United Animal Nation for their shopping lists for pet disaster preparedness
Please
stop by the San Juan Capistrano PetsMart Luv-A-Pet center to visit
the cats. Your visits help encourage them to come to the front of the cage,
where they need to be when that right someone comes in for a visit.
You can help by referring friends, coworkers and others to the cattery when
they are considering adding an animal to their life.
A special thanks to all who volunteered to work at a CARE adoption day, fostered a dog or
cat or helped at the cattery this quarter.
