The CARE Times staff has had a

easy to be with on a leash.
Don't let that gray
fool you. The Vets who have been providing his good care tell us that his
eyes and teeth indicate he is just over two years old.

Billy was seen running along Camino
Capistrano near the railroad tracks. A local family stopped and moved
him to safety. They returned and posted many flyers in the neighborhood
where he was found to help reunite him with his family. Upon contacting
CARE, they were reassured that he could go to the shelter and if not
claimed by his family, returned to CARE. This family asked if they could
volunteer to foster him if not claimed by his family.
Unfortunately his family did not
respond to the flyers and did not retrieve him from the shelter.
Fortunately for Billy, the family that helped him followed up and
fostered him for CARE. Billy visited the Petsmart Adoption Days on
Saturdays and got to know a number of volunteers. After creating the
draft version, the CARE Times staff just
found out that Billy found a great home. Those of you who have
been long time readers of the CARE Times may remember that one of
our first featured dogs was Baily. Baily, one of the first
dogs that CARE adopted several years ago passed away six months ago. Baily's family loved the adult dog they adopted from CARE and felt that
it might be time to search for another. They saw Billy's promotional
flyers, developed by our volunteers and asked to make arrangements for
a visit. The Foster Volunteer Team shared the information they knew
about Billy and the visit turned into a new forever home for Billy.
A very special thanks to the
young ladies and family that fostered Billy and those who helped show
him at adoption events. |

CARE Financial Review Results Presented at the CARE
General Meeting.
A couple of months ago, the
Flores and Johnston, CPAs
company completed an independent financial review of CARE's
finances. In summary, they found CARE to be a fiscally sound
501c3. From their cover letter: "Our review was made for the
purpose of expressing limited assurance that there are no material
modifications that should be made to the financial statements in
order for them to be in conformity with generally accepted
accounting principles. Such information has been subjected to the
inquiry and analytical procedures applied in the review of the basic
financial statements, and we are not aware of any material
modifications that should be made thereto." CARE appreciates their
professional relationship with the independent company, Flores and
Johnston, CPA and looks forward to their guidance as CARE continues
to grow and meet more goals.
CARE currently expects to
undergo yearly reviews to continue to look for recommendations that
will allow continuous improvement in processes.
Members, Volunteers and
Supporters are encouraged to read the financial review.

Kitten
Season Lasts All Year But June & July Were Heavy Months and CARE
Is Still In Kitten Over Load
- Thanks to all fosters who
helped take care of kittens during 2006. Although this year
has not seen the depth of upper respiratory, you helped us get
through last year, our fosters have had considerable challenge with
tiny kittens abandoned by their moms. Your willingness to provide
parts of your homes as isolation wards and bottle feed even the
smallest helped save many kittens.
- Join CARE in encouraging
early spay and neuter of pets to help reduce the pet
overpopulation problems and for their pet's health.
Thanks to all
of the CARE volunteers who make this happen. Without
them we couldn't do it.
IRS Form 990 Trivia
Did you know that most small to
large 501c3 not for profit organizations file IRS form 990 or 990 EZ?
The IRS processes the filings and then sells the information to
companies. Several post it where it can even be found on the
internet. Although CARE
already filed their 2005 form 990, it is not yet available on Guidestar or Network for Good. Both organizations help CARE with
our online donations via the "Donate Now" buttons that appear on the
web site. Guidestar updates CARE and others about once a year. Since
the form 990 numbers come from the IRS, donor confidence increases
when encouraged to utilize these two sites. It takes some time for
the IRS to process the form 990s, package the information,
distribute it to Guidestar and then for Guidestar to post it to
their web sites. To

CARE Members Attend Helen Woodward Animal Center
Education Workshops
At the invitation of the Helen
Woodward Animal Center, three CARE Member/Volunteer attended a three
day workshop on many different aspects of humane rescue and
organizational processes. Presenters included
Michael Arms, the senior staff of the Helen Woodward Animal Center,
Board Members, architect/planners, application service providers,
and pet health companies This edition of the workshop concentrated
on the business end of the organization and included topics in
learning to increase adoptions and lower euthanasia, fundraising
techniques, education concepts, volunteer management, public
relations, and marketing. While there members of the center
congratulated the Member/Volunteers and remarked on the challenges
of keeping focus on the dual tracks. With the help of CARE
Supporters, CARE has been able to significantly achieve their goals
of helping the dogs and cats that end up at the shelter today and
simultaneously build a capital program and make advancements on the
Adoption Center that will help the pets of tomorrow. Members
attending the workshop applaud and praise the Staff of Helen
Woodward Animal Center for their programs and sponsoring the
educational opportunities they offer shelters and rescue
organizations.

Can
You Help CARE's dogs?
CARE's dogs
primary exposure is at Weekend Adoption Events or PR events like the CARe
SHOW 2006. However, without volunteers to help transport the dogs and show
the dogs, they end up not being shown to the public. If you are experienced
with dogs, we need your help. You can be very instrumental in helping good
dogs like Bosley, Billy and Nina find their new home.

Ortega Animal Care Clinic Presents CARE Pets to Public
Dr. Rich and Sharon Kuhn, owners of
the Ortega Animal Care Clinic have been big supporters of the dogs and
cats of CARE. During their Grand Opening, they presented a petting zoo
and BBQ Fundraiser for CARE's pets. Additionally selected CARE pets
reside in the Center's cute pet suites, providing an additional level of
visibility to the public. Up to five cats at a time have been featured
front row in lobby resulting in several adoptions. As the facility
continues to grow out, CARE dogs may also have the opportunity to enjoy
one of the suites to help find them find a forever home.

Question:
Casper, update me on what's going on. What
can we do to help? |
Answer: Glad you asked.
Those of you who are currently Members of CARE are encouraged to vote in the
upcoming election on August 28th. Families who adopt pets from CARE also
receive a one year Membership. Your attendance and vote is welcome at the
annual meeting.
In addition to
reading this newsletter, take the time to read the
State of CARE
presentation. Take the time to review the
2004-2005
Financial Statements to gain a better understanding of the progress CARE
has made. On the home page, you can download the Summer Edition of the CARE
Quarterly and read interesting success stories, volunteer profiles and see
many of the pets you have helped find homes.
CARE continues to
make progress. This year, CARE recently had a very successful CARE for the
Gardens of San Juan Capistrano. Planning for the CARe SHOW, now going into
it's fourth year is well underway. Following on the success of CARe SHOW,
Capistrano Harley-Davidson is proudly sponsoring the exciting HOGS for DOGS
(and cats). Please volunteer today to help at these important events.
Near the end of the
first quarter 2006, CARE received the next draft of the floor plan for the
adoption center. During the second quarter of 2006, approximately 30
individuals reviewed the plans and made many recommendations. CARE wisely
sought out the assistance of Shelter Professionals, Veterinarians and larger
Rescue/Shelter organizations in this important review. During this review,
weaknesses in the design, particularly in animal health were identified and
alternatives presented. CARE appreciates the gifts you make to the animals.
They recognize the responsibility to those of you who are helping get
to a permanent future Adoption Center, To build a facility that better
protects the pet's health requires balancing the construction costs against
future pet health care costs. More than 100 modifications have been made to
the design, primarily on the inside of the buildings. The most significant
changes for both dogs and cats are associated with requirements to improve
separation of environments for pets with good health from those with not yet
known health or recovering from a minor health problem. During this time
frame, a local volunteer generated multiple computer models of the original
and multiple revisions to assist communications for those reviewing the
plans to better identify needed changes. Communication is the key
component in building a facility to meet both the needs of the animals and
the organization. The revisions recorded from the communication of the past
90 days move CARE significantly closer to a final set of plans for the
facility.
CARE is actively
seeking and receiving proposals from Architectural firms experienced in
shelter design. CARE anticipates additional changes from the experienced
firm that helps go forward. Additional design enhancements are still
expected in pet health areas. CARE anticipates selecting an experienced firm
that will add value in selection of building materials, cost value
engineering, sustainability/energy consumption engineering, reduction of
heat island environment impact, structural engineering, HVAC ventilation
engineering and extending the life of the building.
As CARE gets closer,
it is hoped that this web site will reflect more information to keep you
informed as the process continues forward to building the Adoption
Center.
Please
stop by the San Juan Capistrano PetsMart Luv-A-Pet center to visit
the cats. Your visits help encourage them to come to the front of the cage,
where they need to be when that right someone comes in for a visit.
You can help by referring friends, coworkers and others to the cattery when
they are considering adding an animal to their life.
A special thanks to all who volunteered to work at a CARE adoption day, fostered a dog or
cat or helped at the cattery this quarter.

Cute little tiger boy. Tons of fun and 100% kitten.
Please encourage friends and neighbors to spay and neuter their pets.
Like many Veterinarians, CARE joins other rescue groups in replacing
the obsolete phrase "early spay/neuter" with "pre pubescent spay & neuter".
Kittens are capable of breeding activity at about 4 to 5 months.
Spaying or neutering at 6 months is now called "late spay" . Should kittens
arrive, you should call it "too late spay". It is never too late
to have your cat or dog altered. Millions die yearly from the
lack of homes.

HOGS for DOGS |
I'm Chico and I wanted to ask for your help.
CARE has a new fun opportunity to continue moving forward. The good folks at
Capistrano
Harley-Davidson
are helping put on what is shaping up to be a fun event. Titled Hogs for Dogs,
this event, like the CARe Show will be an important part of their fundraising.
So here are ways for you to help. Please make sure to send the links below to
your friends who have interests in motorcycles. To make it more fun, there
will be live bands and
Sarducci's Restaurant will provide
great aromas to sniff and munching opportunities.
Volunteer now to help make
arrangements and to work October 8th. Encourage friends to stop by to see
the custom choppers, highly personalized and antique motorcycles.
We need fun things
for the raffle table, Be creative and ask friends if they can help too.

CARE to Experiment With Online Registration
The HOGS For DOGS event will be CARE's first use of
online event registration. Reasons for making this change include enhanced
follow up with attendees, improved notification of any changes, easier
registrations, ability to use VISA & MC, expected increased registration from
ease of use and ability to complete in minutes with credit card, "tell a
friend" and reduced volunteer overhead. This is an important step for CARE. A
large list of providers has been narrowed to two. Those of you who have been
with CARE for a while will not be surprised by what sets at the top of the
requirements list. A high level of online security and an agreement of
respecting the private nature of the information and not sharing our supporters
information with others continue to top our list of vendor requirements.
Presentations are being sent to Board Members and you should be able to refer
motorcycle lovers to online registration in about 30 days. Print and mail
registration is available today. |

CARE Trivia
Questions
|
|
Why doesn't CARE refer
to itself as No-Kill?
Answers:
No-Kill is a phrase
that is redefined in a manner that it missleads and confuses the public and
volunteers. It does not mean that pets are not euthanized. Since the earliest
times of CARE, the phrase pro-humane has been used to describe our
programs. CARE intentionally chose this approach for clarity rather than
use a phrase that easily misleads the public.

no-kill, see this web site:
