Serg:  The Tail End of a Successful Tale

When CARE picked Serg up from OCAS, he made his way to visit with a Capistrano Veterinarian. Although his life appeared to have been rough prior to being picked up, the cuts and URI obtained on the streets could be overcome. Proclaimed to be a very "sick kitty", this already weakened boy declined even further as his URI continued to progress. In November, Volunteers planning upcoming events, had the opportunity to meet Serg.  As Serg laid on his side, barely able to wheeze, whisper a meow, or lift his head,  I moved a small dish of water very close to his mouth and encouraged Serg to drink; even if just a little. He lapped twice, enough to make his mouth more comfortable as he strained to take another difficult yet important breath.  Others whispered in quiet concern, "Will he be able to recover?". I quietly responded that the foster providing supportive care for Serg had experience with ill cats. Serg's care included a veterinarian who was checking up on him. Serg's foster would use multiple techniques to keep encouraging him to eat and drink. His foster would continue to keep him medicated and comfortable while this frail feline fought this tough battle. Much of the answer lied in nature and Serg himself. Was he strong enough to pull through?

While attending a mid December Pet Pix with Santa fundraiser at the San Juan Capistrano Petsmart, I stopped by to visit the cats. I noticed a new grey and white boy. A volunteer asked "Do you recognize him?" As he moved to the front of the kennel for more attention, I saw the healing scratches on his face. It was Serg. This now healthy, happy boy was looking for his new home. My emotions flashed from surprise, to relief, through humility of nature and ended with gratitude for each of you who help in many ways to make this program available for pets like Serg.

It's CARE's pleasure to share this image as Serg's new family writes:

I thought you might get a kick out of this.  This is the kitty that was named SERG at Petsmart and we changed it to Felix The Cat!   Check out the attached photo's and tell me he has not adapted to his new home.   Will you please share these pics with everyone that helped us with visiting, playing with him while he was still at Petsmart before the adoption. This is definitely the life!  This is the first time I caught him doing this since we adopted him on New Year's Eve.  I turned on his Cat DVD and when I went into the kitchen. I passed by, looked over and found him on the couch watching TV on his back on the sofa.  I cracked up.  Where's the beer and popcorn?

Many of you have helped along the way, and many more pets continue to need your help.

Serg At the Petsmart Charities Adoption Center after recovering and just before finding his new home. In the fall of 2008, Serg entered Orange County Animal Shelter. With cuts across his face, this severely sickened stray was already weakened by a severe URI (upper respiratory infection) caught on the streets of San Juan Capistrano. Those caring for pets rescued from large shelters, expect an isolation period of about three weeks. Although good shelters have procedures and training in place to attempt to control URI, the sheer number of pets that go through a large shelter increases the chance that one of them currently has easily spread URI.  That one will quickly pass it on to the others. The larger or more crowded the shelter, the more difficult the challenge becomes. Foster homes provide smaller organizations the ability to have some small isolation areas of a home where the pet is kept away from other pets until the new foster pet recovers. The chances of an adult cat with URI being adopted from most large government shelters throughout the US is nearly non existent. But the OC shelter workers knew Serg was from San Juan Capistrano and he would have the chance to enter the CARE foster program.

Although beer isn't good for pets, The author has one cat who asks for the occasional kernel of popped corn..
Such a life Serg/Felix! Tales to tell and a tail to swish.

Some Easy Steps to Help Your Pet In Case of Disaster or Separation

Here are some important actions you can take today to make sure your pet is ready for a disaster.

  • Check your Pet's tags. They are your pet's best chance of being returned to you.

  • Call your pet over close to you. Look at their tag on their collar. Is it time to replace the tag?

  • Can you easily read your phone number?

  • Has your number changed? Area code/Cell/landline?

  • Is your pet's information current in the micro-chip identification database?

  • Has your land line phone number changed?

  • Has your mobile phone number changed?

  • Has your pet's vet changed?

  • Has your address changed?

  • Has your alternate contact's phone number changed?

For the last seven years, CARE pets almost always are adopted with micro-chips already implanted. This has helped reunite pets adopted from CARE with their families. Additionally, it has helped other Southern California shelters return a CARE pet if the new owner turned them into a shelter. CARE can then pick up the pet at the shelter.

Unless a different chip was implanted prior to the pet joining CARE, AVID microchips are the preferred chip. AVID developed the concept of pet tracking through  permanent RFID chips. CARE chooses the AVID Inside chips at 125Khz because:

  • Easily read microchips can help reunite pets with their owners.

  • Avid chips are proven to be very effective and reliable.

  • In a disaster emergency evacuation situation, micro-chips are the best way to record pet identification associated with movement of found or temporarily relinquished pets.

  • AVID chips can be read by most shelters in the US.

  • Orange County and South OC shelters use AVID chips.

  • 98% of all US chips are 125Khz.

  • 80% of all scanners used by shelters, rescues and disaster teams in the US can not read chips that are not 125Khz.

Note: Home-Again Chips are 125Khz and most universal scanners can read them.

JJ CALE

Capistrano Animal Rescue Effort received a $1,000 donation from legendary musician and Grammy winner JJ Cale from the proceeds of his recent concert at The Coach House.
Cale, who recently released a new album, Roll On, to considerable acclaim but seldom tours, decided that he wanted to give back to the local communities in which he performed. Given his concern with the plight of animals, especially in today’s economy, Cale decided to contribute to local shelters and rescue groups.
“We are thrilled that CARE has benefited from JJ Cale’s concert,” said President Matt Gaffney, a long-time fan who attended the concert and received the contribution from Cale. “We are tremendously grateful for his generosity and the attention he is bringing to the plight of homeless and abandoned pets.”
Thanks JJ Cale for helping CARE help the cats and dogs,

Charlie and Faith -  are two registered Tonkinese cats that had to be owner relinquished because they were upset when a dog was introduced to the family. Faith is the more outgoing one and Charlie is very shy and needs much more time to come around. Charlie needs Faith to calm her and reassure her when new things take place. Therefore, they need to be adopted together.

Both are friendly and playful and loving once routines are set. They seem to get along with another very polite cat, but may do better as only pets in the household. They both have aqua colored eyes and fur that feels like mink. They will do best with warm, gentle, soft spoken, patient owners. Please call the CARE line at 949-240-1735 to set an appointment to see them.

Special Needs

Meet Featured Cat Cheetos:

Here is a boy that needs your help. Cheetos is very shy. He really likes other gentile cats and is very good at helping them feel comfortable. He does best with a feline playmate to play together. He likes the cattery volunteers, yet will hide from all other visitors. How can he find a home, if he won't let the public see him? He needs your help. Do you know of a quiet family looking for a fine, gentle soul to add to their life. His sweetness that he shows to the cattery volunteers would reward the family that adopts him. If the family does not have a cat friend for Cheetos, CARE can help with that too.

Cheetos is as cute as they come. Stop by the cattery to see him and then together, let's find Cheetos a home.

CARE Leverages Secure Online Services

CARE continues to leverage secured online services to simplify online registration for major events. 2009 is the third year that the CARe SHOW and HOGS For DOGS (and cats too) events have provided online registration services. PayPal, a leader in online merchant transaction processing provides the credit card services. Credit card processing for these events occurs on the secured PayPal servers, rather than on a volunteer maintained web site. This provides one of the highest levels of security (PCI Level 1 Merchant certified) for those using these services.

Be sure to visit the new CARE Membership site using these same technologies to see how easy it is to join or renew your membership.

The DONATE NOW feature that appears in our newsletters and on the web site is provided by Network For Good. Primarily funded by major technology companies, Network For Good provides secured donation services for many non profit organizations throughout the world.

Please consider making a tax deductible donation to Capistrano Animal Rescue Effort. Thank you for helping us provide the gifts of food, shelter, medical care and love to our animal companions.
